FAQ

What is Hoop Dance?

Hoop Dance, or “hooping” refers to dancing with a hula hoop. This form of dance has roots in both the toy hula hoops of the 60’s and circus performance.

Why Hooping?

Hooping is great for you in many aspects – its tons of fun, a great workout, tones your body, improves strength, flexibility and balance, and inspires self confidence.

What will I learn in a Hoop Dance class?

In this class you will learn all of the basic movements and ‘tricks’ involved in hooping, and how to put them together in a dance-like flow.

How long is a class? How many people will be there?

Classes are generally about 1 hour long, organized into a 10 minute warm-up, 35 minutes of learning new tricks, and 15 minutes of free-hooping to music. I try to limit classes to 10 students.

Do I need to bring my own hoop?

You are welcome to bring your own hoop to class, but I will also be supplying hoops for students to use during class. I do, however, recommend that you purchase your own hoop to practice with at home. I will have hoops for sale – the normal price is $25/hoop, but a student discount will be available - $20/hoop or 2 for $30. This price includes a hoop of a size of your choosing with 2-3 basic colors. Please note that, for some reason, the color pink, in any type of decorative tape, is harder to find and more expensive, therefore, if you want pink on your hoop, it will be an extra $3 for accent stripes or $8 for the base color. Special (I.E. shiney, glittery, UV reactive) tapes may be requested at an additional price.

How long will it take me to learn Hoop Dance?

As with any skill, everyone learns at a different pace. Some people take to hooping like a fish to water, others take much longer. Be patient and practice every day, you’ll get it!

What should I wear to class?

Hooping is easier in certain outfits/materials than in others. Avoid any loose/baggy clothing or clothing made of a slippery material. Hoops stick the best to skin – if you are comfortable in a shirt that shows your midriff, that’s great. For most classes, shorts or cotton work-out pants and a tank top should be fine. However, for classes when we are covering knee-hooping moves, I will request that you wear shorts. As for feet, barefoot is best. Avoid wearing jewelry.
